What’s the Difference Between Hair and Fur

Hair is different from fur because it’s used to describe a more sparse body hair.

Fur is a term that’s usually confined to just mammals that have thick body hair. With cats, you’ll see that they have body hair called fur because it’s very sick. Who is breeds, like the Sphinx, have short, sparse hair instead of the thick fur that you’d see on a cat like the Ragdoll. Terms like hairy balls are used to describe the fur that cats swallow and then throw up, and you’ll see the many people refer to their cats as “furballs” or “furbabies.”

Cat hair can be thought of as the individual strand of hair and cat fur is it collectively all over their body. For example, when you pet them you’re petting their fur, but if you were to pluck one of their hairs, then you’d be holding a single hair. You can also notice the differentiation when you say that you find cat hair on your clothes. Since it’s just a few strands, then it can be referred to as fur, which is the complete thick coat.

All breeders usually describe the overall appearance of your cat’s fur as its coat. This term is used exclusively and breed standards but you’ll also see hair mentioned in the name of different cat breeds, like long hair or short hair.

All in all, people will know what you’re talking about no matter what you say. Whether you say coat, hair, or fur, people will understand that you’re talking about the cat’s body hair. It’s mostly just about using the term that is most comfortable for you.

Types of Hair On Their Body

Cats have skin and hair that works very similarly to humans. The skin on the cow is the largest and most important organs of their body. The skin from warm does a barrier to protect the cat from outside elements like infections and parasites. It also maintains its natural environment inside of the body to prevent moisture loss and other important bodily fluids from being lost. skin on the outside of the body is very strong because it’s exposed to outside elements and susceptible to injury and disease.

The skin is made up of layers of cells, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, nerve endings and hair follicles. The hair follicles are the ones that produce all of the hair on your cat’s body to become their fur coat. Hair follicles and sebaceous glands on your cat are more prevalent on their back then on their belly. The epidermis, which is the outside layer of skin varies in thickness all over their body and in more exposed areas, the epidermis is thicker oh, like on the head and back of the cat, which is where you’ll find the largest amount of hair.

When a kitten is born, they aren’t born naked. In the beginning, they have very soft or wooly fur coats. Their hair is often short and soft, and it’s usually a similar color to what their coat will be when they’re an adult. Other cats develop color on their coat as they age, like Siamese cats are born white or cream and develop the dark parts of their fur when they age.

Overall, kittens develop a course around longer cool by the time they are 6 to 8 months of age. There are a lot of different breeds that have different rates of coat development and there are other factors like day length, outdoor temperature, hormones and nutrition that affect coat development also.

Cats have four types of hair. The first time is secondary hair, which is short fluffy hair. It’s usually referred to as the undercoat, and it can influence how much your cat sheds. The second type of hair is stiffer and longer and it’s called the primary hair. They’re referred to as guard hairs are outer hairs. This is usually the part that you’re petting. Unlike other mammals, cats have hair called awn hair, which is weaker and thinner than the primary hairs on their body. Lastly, cats have whiskers which are used to help your cat take in sensory details of their surroundings.

How Much Hair Grows

The number of primary and secondary hairs that grow differs between the age of the cat and the breed of the cat. Newborn kittens don’t have primary hairs and that’s why their coats are short and soft. By the time they’re six months old, most kittens will develop primary hairs so their coats are longer and more coarse. There are a lot of variations among breeds concerning the length, color and texture of the hair coat. These are the results of the primary to secondary Horatio and the texture of the individual hairs all over their body.

Each hair grows from an opening called a hair follicle. A kitten is born with all of their hair follicles and will ever have, and any differences or changes of the haircut will be because of changes within the follicle. The hair shaft produced by the hair follicle will die and be removed, which is why they shed. It will be replaced with a new hair that’s produced by that hair follicle. They will continuously do this all throughout their life and replace it with new, live growing hair. There’s no such thing as a non-shedding cat. The amount that they shed can be determined by the breed, age, amount of sunlight, sex, hormones, and nutrition.

Breeds and individuals inside every breed will shed and regrow hair at different rates. If a cat sheds more often, it would be more noticeable if it sheds extensively over several weeks. Indoor cats shed in more of a continuous fashion then outdoor cats because of artificial heat and light. Outdoor cats that stay outside will shed for several weeks during seasonal changes, especially in the spring and fall. Other cats grow more secondary hairs underfur in the fall because they need warmth since they live outside.

Overall, cats will grow the same amount of hair for their entire life, and they’ll shed and regrow hair from the same follicle.

Types of Cat Coats

Cat breeds can be divided into three different hair type categories. They can be classified as long hair, short hair or hairless. Persian cats are the most well-known long-haired breed and Siamese cats are cats that are popular and belong to the short-haired breed. If you know what these two cats look like, you kind of understand what a short hair and a long hair cat is. Short-haired cats have a coat that is usually less than 2 inches. Long-haired breeds have the same kind of fur but it can grow up to five inches long.

Cats are usually great at grooming themselves, but if you have a long haired cat that you’ll find yourself doing a bit more grooming. They have the tendency to have a hair that’s matted and get something stuck in it excessively. Regular grooming is necessary because these cats also shed more than short hair cats.

If you’re interested in a hairless cat, the new Sphynx cat is an example of a hairless breed that does it have fur, but has hair. They appear to be completely naked but they have very short, fine hair that is close to their skin. They require a bit more care because their skin needs to be moist and they need to be bathed regularly. They also can get pimples and blackheads the same way that human skin can.

Allergies

Many people are allergic to cats. They carry a tiny protein called Feld1, and it’s in their saliva. They transfer it to their hair when they groom themselves, and it can dry into microscopic flakes called dander. Long or thick haired cats will have more dander and this is why people get the misconception that hair is what they’re allergic to. Dander can get all over the house wherever they go. It can be found on whatever they jump on or wherever they exist. In the air, bedding, carpets and drapes is where you’ll find the dander in your house.

Allergies to cat dander can be controlled, so if you’re allergic to a cat, you could still have one as a pet. One of the things you should ensure is that your cat doesn’t sleep in your bed. This will stop you from having some symptoms and it will give you a place to escape to when you need a break. You can also completely keep them out of your bedroom to keep the cat allergen out of it.

Another thing you can do is wash your bedding and 140 degree hot water at least twice a month. This will eliminate dust mites and cat allergens. You can also use HEPA filters in your rooms where cats frequent. Cat allergen is difficult to remove so a good filter and essential for cleaning the air in your home. They don’t require filter replacement and a good filter will ensure that you can exist around your cat comfortably.

Cat fur is dense and you pet it all the time, but you find the hair on your couch. That’s an easy way to remember the difference. It’s a small difference, so you don’t need to panic if you interchange the two.
